Introduction

Before selecting and carving a stone, the sculptor and stone craftsmen should know about its characteristics so that his/her work will be more productive.  In the following sections we include some geological information, particularly information that we consider useful regarding stone formation, composition, structure, and so on.  It is important for a stone worker to have the ability to anticipate carving problems and thus become more knowledgeable about the great variety of stones that are available so that he/she can choose the most suitable stone for the job in hand.
